School Wide Behavior PlanDISCIPLINE PLAN - SCHOOL WIDE: S.O.A.R. ABOVE THE LINE
S.O.A.R (Safe, On Task, Acting Responsibly, & Respectful) Above the Line is a system used to categorize behavior into these three categories: • Above the Line - behavior is appropriate; acceptable • Below the Line - behavior is inappropriate • Bottom Line – serious rule infractions; violation of school district policy ABOVE THE LINE When a student acts appropriately, their behavior is referred to as being "Above the Line". BELOW THE LINE When a student acts inappropriately, their behavior is referred to as being "Below the Line.” It is at this point that the adult observing the Below the Line behavior will give the student a choice. The student is asked, "Do you want a consequence, or do you want to fix it?" It is very unusual for a student to choose a consequence. The student generally chooses to "fix it." At that time, a Fix-It Plan is completed. The student is asked to brainstorm ways they can "fix" or "repair the harm" that they have caused. This brainstorming often takes place during the child's recess time or may need to be completed at home with parents. An example...if a student made fun of a classmate and left him or her out of a game, a Fix-It Plan might involve being "extra" kind to the student. For example, the offending student might invite the other child to join in a game that day, or write a letter to the child listing three specific things they like about him or her. The child who had been made fun of is encouraged to give input as to what he or she thinks might help "repair the harm." It is the job of the adult staff member to follow-up and make sure that the plan was carried out. In the event that the plan was not completed, the offending student forfeits their opportunity to "fix" the problem, and instead receives a consequence determined by the teacher. BOTTOM LINE When a student's behavior is considered "Bottom Line,” he or she is automatically referred to the principal. The principal will then determine the necessary actions depending on the severity of the inappropriate behavior. Although Bottom-Line infractions automatically result in a consequence, students are also encouraged to complete a Fix-It Plan. The teacher and principal will contact parents if a student's behavior is Bottom Line. We believe this plan will be very positive and effective for students. Involving students in the process of establishing expectations for their own behavior helps promote a sense of belonging and community throughout the entire school. |
